Introduction About Marken

Marken is a small village located in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands. It is situated on a peninsula in the Markermeer, a lake in the central Netherlands. Marken is known for its traditional wooden houses, which have been well-preserved and are now used as museums and souvenir shops.

The history of Marken dates back to the 13th century, when the area was used as a fisherman’s village. The village was isolated from the mainland until the 20th century, when a dike was built to connect it to the rest of the province. This isolation has helped to preserve the traditional way of life in Marken, and many of the villagers still work in the fishing industry.

One of the main attractions in Marken is the Marken Museum, which is housed in a traditional wooden house. The museum tells the history of the village and displays artifacts and memorabilia from the local fishing industry. Visitors can also take a tour of the village and see the traditional houses up close.

In addition to its historical and cultural attractions, Marken is also a great place for outdoor activities. The village is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, including the Markermeer and the nearby polder (low-lying grassland) and dunes. There are several hiking and cycling trails in the area, as well as waterways for boating and fishing.

Marken is a small, charming village that offers a unique blend of history and natural beauty. It is a great destination for those interested in traditional Dutch culture and the history of the fishing industry.

Tours and activities in Marken

Marken is a must-see destination for anyone visiting the area, known for its miniature wooden houses. In the past, people in the region lived on man-made hills called “werven” to protect their homes from flooding. As a result, houses were built on stilts. Despite the construction of the Afsluitdijk dike, which prevented the island from flooding, the traditional houses have been preserved. The Marken Museum, which showcases traditional costumes and artifacts, and the historic wooden clog factory are also worth visiting. At the park-based wooden clog factory, visitors can watch the process of making clogs starting from a woodblock.

The island’s history is celebrated at the Marken Museum (Kerkbuurt 44-47), which displays traditional clothes, utensils, and artwork created by the island’s residents. For more traditional Dutch costumes, visitors can also visit the charming town of Volendam. The Volendam Marken Express ferry provides daily service between the two towns.

Marken is a small island, making it easy to explore. The island is about 9 kilometers in length, including the dike. One must-see attraction is the “Paard van Marken” lighthouse, which was built in 1839 and is still in use today. It is a charming lighthouse with a white tower and a red top.

Location and getting to Marken

Markermeer’s former island of Marken is now accessible by car, bicycle, or foot, thanks to a 1.6-kilometer dike. On the peninsula, there is only one parking lot with daily rates of about €5. (including drivers). Each additional visitor will be charged 0.55 Euros. You can avoid paying for parking if you leave your car on the mainland and walk across the sea wall. Amsterdam Noord can be reached in 30 minutes via bus 315, as can nearby Monnickendam, a charming little port town.

Travel destinations from Marken

The city of Marken can be found on the Markermeer waterway (Markermeer Lake). A trip on the Volendam Marken Express boat to Volendam is one of the region’s most beautiful excursions. Have your picture taken in a traditional costume while on the tour! If you’d prefer, you can eat a Dutch pancake while crossing the street. To be honest, I’d rather have some cheese. In Edam, about a 16-kilometer drive away, cheese has a reputation for being excellent, and the cheese industry there is well-known far beyond the Netherlands’ borders. Hoorn, a sleepy fishing village, is a popular tourist destination. It’s also on the lake’s edge, in a charming historic village called Markermeer.
